On May 8th 2026, TV’s most celebrated, natural world broadcaster and film maker turned 100. There were many celebrations across the nation honouring Sir David’s landmark birthday. Including Poynton’s Paul Tavernor Art Gallery, situated on Park Lane in the village.
Paul credits Sir David, as being a major contributing factor in nurturing a lifelong passion for nature and animal inspired artworks from those early years watching his documentaries.
Paul painted David’s portrait on a 1 metre plus canvas, in acrylic over 2 days, entitled `Earth’s Champion`. As a personal tribute to the legendary man of wildlife.
The painting, accompanied by a personal message from Paul was originally intended to be displayed for the weekend, but due to the overwhelming attention, it received with people wanting to speak about David and the painting, it was displayed for a couple of weeks.
At the end of May, Paul decided to offer the painting to Vernon Primary School in Poynton, as they are located just around the corner from the gallery and their Year 6 classes visit the Art Gallery every year with their Art Teacher.
Last week, the Primary School were delighted to receive the painting. Along, with a card from Paul, hoping the painting will inspire two things. First the importance of the environment and the natural world around them, and secondly, maybe it may help inspire the next generation of budding artists, just as Paul was many years ago.
Paul added “I have been inspired by David Attenborough’s storytelling, and animal encounters all my life and because of him, many of us have nurtured our own lifelong passion for wildlife, animals and nature. I believe David’s films are now more relevant than ever before, and for my small part, through my art and words, I will go on being an advocate for nature and the wildlife who share the only planet we have together”.
