I'm searching an ancestor, William Bailey , born at Worth, Poynton in1810. Are there any parish registers available which might help me find the family ? I see the parish church was rebuilt & wonder where the old graves from the original church building are sited ?
Any local historians/archivists I could contact ?

I am looking for Graham and Chris Thomas.  They lived in Yew Tree Lane and later on their parents ran a shop (material I think) on Park Lane near the old Vernon School.  This was in the late 1960's.

Anyone heard of them recently?

Cheers from Australia

I have many fond childhood memories of visiting my Great Grandfather Robert Hughes Wroe who lived on the London Road I believe.
Both my 'pompa' and my Great Grandmother are buried in the church graveyard.

My Sister and I are hoping to come over from the USA next year and visit Poynton.
To rekindle those happy memories.

According to my brother, the family geneologist, we are descended from a younger son of the Warren family who left Poynton in the 1600's and emigrated to Maryland. His descendants moved to Virginia, and my great great grandfather moved west to Tennessee, where we now live. His grandfather had lived on a plantation called Poynton in Virginia.
I will be in Cheshire in November and would like to visit Poynton and meet any Warren family members who might still be living in the area.

If so, are records available?

It is good to see a user friendly web site.  I was born in Poynton and lived there until 1990 when I moved to the Isle of Man. It would be good to hear from any one that remembers me, I left PCHS in 1976.  The photo's are excellent, is it ok to use one as wallpaper for my desktop?

For the lady that talked about piano lessons, I think the teachers name was Miss Hopwood? (I failed miserably learning the piano as I did not practice!)

Great site. used to live in Adlington but came to poynton for piano lessons in late fifties, early sixties. Cant remember the ladies name but lived with mother in a cottage on rh side of main road just before Adlington and near big black and white house now an old people's home. Cottage still there at Christmas when i last visited the area.  My parents and sister later lived poynton for many years. like everywhere else Poynton has certainly changed over the years-probably Co-op, Tweedales hairdressers which my mother went to until 3 years ago, and post offfice are only remainders from 1960's.

Does anyone knoe Tony Preston who lived at 5 Hepley Road, Poynton, Stockport, Cheshire circa 1970?  I was his Scottish penpal and lost contact with him many moons ago but I have fond thoughts of him always and would like to get in contact with him again.  I would like to know what he is doing now and to tell him that I am still singing and have a very successful band and am now a lawyer.  I would like to know how his life turned out.  He had a lovely sister called Gillian.  Perhaps someone remembers the family.
He did invite me to come to Poynton, but at that time I could not, but I have been since, although I only passed through, I really enjoyed myself.  Lovely place.
Kind Regards from Bonnie Scotland

Hi,

This is an excellent site - I have seen the photos and used the re-uinted section to try to find my old friends, the Hills and the Hunts.

I knew Poynton well in the 1960s/70s when I spent much of my school holidays there. My Mother was born in Poynton - at the same house my (Great) Aunt lived in. ["Croysdale", 58, Chester Road]. My Aunt was Miss Iris (Bunt) Butterworth and my Mother, Mrs Della Cooksey Jones (Nee French).

It was tremendous to see Fountain Place on the front page - going to and from Poynton I used to catch the joint Ribble/Trent X1 (Manchester-Derby) Bus Service from just next to bernie White's Chemist there.

The Church has mixed memories for me - tyhe Butterworth family grave is there (I must visit it again soon!) but my Aunt was knocked-down there when going to Christmas Midnight Mass in 1966. Her broken leg recovered and with her usual spirit, she pottered on until she became too ill to continue living in her large house and joined us in Derby (that was 1982).

I used to walk with my Aunt from Higher Poynton (by the new Marina, as it was then) to Lyme Hall at Disley. 9My Aunt and my Nanna were born to James & Isabelle Butterworth in Higher Poynton)

If anyone has any old (or more new) photos about Poynotn I'd be fascinated.

I live down here in Hampshire (UK) now but Poynton is much closer to me than the 200 geographical miles.

Best wishes to you all, John French-Jones.

My 10th great grandmother Dorothy Poynton, born about 1577, somewhere around Northampton, was probably related to the Poyntons of Poynton Village. William Stone (1603-1659), the first governor of Maryland (USA) named his estate, Poynton Manor, after his mother Dorothy Poynton. If anyone in the Village has any information on the history of Poynton Village I would love to hear from you. Thank you.

I received a drawing of Poynton Church and rememembered that my great-great grandfather John Greenhalgh and his wife Isabella are buried in the churchyard. I recall visiting a relation in about 1936 just after the last colliery closed and that there were various relatives still living there.  I wonder if any current residents have links to the descendants of John and Isabella Greenhalgh who died in 1893 and 1902 respectively. I have quite a lot of the family tree but not of the Poynton families.

Fantastic website Poynton - it's great to see a small community taking such good care of itself!  I found the site looking for some family history information - my great grandmother was Sarah Walker and born in Poynton in the early 1880's.  Would be happy to hear from anyone if they know about any Walkers!

Hi folks!
Does any-one remember me, Clare  Smith, I lived on Woodford rd , Poynton, I went to Lower park school, and then they built Lostock hall school and so i went there, I also went to Poynton High, I was in 1RVN Mr Nichols class in 1st year, and then I emigrated to Australia, in 1977 when i was 12. I still have very fond and vivid memories of my childhood, in Poynton and have been back several times with my family.
                Thanks for the memories.

Just been looking through the visitors book and see I was put there from the old pupils list from the school! My husband and I went back to Poynton last year and it was lovely to be "home" again after so many years away. So good to see old school friends again as well. Won't leave it so long nest time. Even though things have changed it still is a lovely place, one that I could cheerfully come back to and stay!

I was in Poynton a few weeks ago, for a lovely holiday. Lucky me, three weeks of sunshine, only one day of showers.

I really had a great, great holiday. Loved the area, loved the place.. except the crossing near the church. First time I arrived there.. ouch.. nightmare.

I would love to come back, do another one of those quiznights in the Farmers Arms or in the Hydes Hare & Hounds.

Regards,
Jacqueline

Ed and I lived in Poynton from 1972 to 1978 and of all the places we have lived, Poynton was my very favourite spot.  On a visit to England last year we had a day in the area and I could have moved right back in to our old house on Buckingham Road.  If anyone in the area remembers us, we'd love to hear from you.

May I suggest to the last entrant, perhaps he should try Blackpool if it's attractions he wants!!! Poynton is full of many nice places to go, and see. How odd that he would think a resturant is the only place worth a visit!! The words life, and get a, spring to mind.

i have visited a famous restaurant in Poynton, which is called the Deeba. This fine establishment promoted this site and also Poynton. the only bad thing is that there are no other attractions in Poynton therefore the only reason to visit this place is to the Deeba.

I remember the name Warburton in Poynton. There was a lady who owned a shop at Hockley, top of Park Lane,(I think it was a cake shop). Can't remember her first name, but do remember that she was Auntie to Barbara Burton and Marjorie who lived in Dicken's Lane. Burton's at one time took over the 'Corner Cafe'at Poynton Church. Small world isn't it.
