The surename Bann is one of the oldest family names in Poynton although it is not as common as it used to be.
I have traced my family tree as far back as 1782 and they all lived in and around Poynton either working on
the land or working in the coal mines as hewers on the coal face. I was born in Poynton in 1940 and went to
school there from 1945 to 1955.On leaving in school I worked at various jobs and finaly finished up
working at a firm called lightnin Mixers. I worked there for about 23 years or untill the site closed around
2001 or 2002 I am now retired and living in Hazel Grove not far from the garden centre. If any one wants to
get in touch see e-mail address

I have a family tie to Poynton and The Birches farm, once the Pickfords headquarters. My 3x Great Grandfather,
Thomas Brindley was the farmer living there in 1841, maybe earlier, and was in Poynton until 1859 until he
moved to farm at Gawsworth New Hall. Eliza Brindley b.1841 and Amelia Brindley b.1843 were both born in
Poynton.
Does anyone know of any history of the Birches and when the farm ceased to be.
Thanks for any help

Hello There
Just found this great site. Well done POYNTON! My name is Patricia (Pat) Prior (Nee Gent). I lived in Poynton
from 1953 until 1959 when my family emigrated to NZ. I have many happy memories of our time in the Village. I
have a younger sister Barbara and a younger brother Peter. My Dad, Les and Mum, Connie sadly passed away
several years ago. My Dad used to ride a motorbike and sidecar and we often used to pull a trailer when we
went on camping holidays to Wales. He used to work for Mirrlees Bickerton in Stockport/Hazel Grove. We lived
in Dombey Road. Our neighbours were the Halls (Linda and Bobby), the Smith family (Eric and Stuart), the
Wenmans, The De Halle family (Angela) and Vernon Hopkins used to live just just down the road.
As young children we used to play in the fields behind the estate and collect May flowers and play in the
brook. Sometimes we would see Gypsies in their brightly coloured caravans when they visited the area selling
pegs etc. For a special treat we were sometimes allowed a 'Ninety Nine' from the ice cream man...a beautiful
ice cream between chocolate wafers with a chocolate flake in the middle..all this was then sprinkled with
raspberry syrup and served in a paper napkin!
Late October to early November was very special as we used to collect 'stuff' for the community bonfire and
would help make a guy. It was the first time I had ever tried Parkin and Treacle Toffee. On occasions were
used to visit a cake shop opposite the main church in Poynton, where displayed in the windows, were trays and
trays of toffee and the assistant used to hammer off pieces of the delicious nutty and caramel delight.
I used to dislike Mondays - it was washing day and can still remember the smell of wet washing and we always
came home for dinner and nearly always had rissoles on Monday...I must admit my Mum made great rissoles but
there was always the damp washing hanging around! Tuesday was shopping day and I used to love going to the
butchers and playing in the sawdust on the floor. I was absolutely fascinated at the Co-op, especially with
the overhead money collecting device(?). Reading some of the other entries on this site, I
too, loved the cake shop and the smell of bread and remember Mum buying potted meat. Close to the primary
school was a sweet shop (it was on the corner opposite the Catholic Church) and occasionally we were allowed
to buy licorice root, which you could chew for hours and hours until you had extracted every last bit of juice
and flavour.
The village band used to come around and play carols at Christmas time. We loved to play outside in the street
on summer evenings and I remember Mum still had 'black out' curtains on the inside of our bedroom curtains
trying to block out the late summer evening sun and trying to convince us it was time to go to sleep!
Together with Babs and Pete we walked up Dickens Lane - right to the end and went into a coppice where we
collected Holly at Christmas time, unfortunately the mist came down and we got a bit lost. As the oldest I was
not very popular with Mum and Dad.
I attended the primary school and remember some of my teachers - Mrs Faulker, Miss Booth, Mr Hartley and Mrs
Buxton. I remember during the winter months putting bowls of bulbs into the few remaining air raid shelters
left on the playing fields. When I was in Mr Hartley's class we were in a classroom across the road from the
main school - a room I seem to remember that was attached to the Methodist Church. During my year with Mr
Hartley I went to see my first 'live' stage performance 'Hans, The Witch & Gobbin'.
I was fortunate enough to be asked to be the Poynton Methodist Church Harvest Princess in September 1955/56?.
I wore a beautiful long pink dress and pink velvet cloak and train. The Harvest Queen that year had beautiful
red hair and wore a long old dress with purple cloak. I had to make an acceptance speech and My Dad pinned a
handwritten copy to my bouquet as a prompt.
I have some old photos somewhere but do remember some school friends of that era - Ann Seldon, Valerie Wenman,
Ian Truman, Wendy Hacket, Denise Tollitt, Peter Butterworth, Roderick Scott, Elaine Curtin, twins Jackie and ?
(sorry), Kathleen Hall and Brenda ? (sorry).
It seems so long ago...51 years!!! I now live in Sydney with my husband Graham. We met at school in NZ and
this year celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary. We have one daughter, Joanne. We are returning to England on
a holiday this year and will certainly be visiting Poynton.
Does anyone have similar memories? Would love to hear from you.
Thanks

My name was Ann Lawson and I was born in Poynton in 1934 and attended Poynton Secondary Modern school as it
was known then. My mother and father and I lived on Chester Road ... just over the railway bridge. The house
was known as Brantwood. I did visit about 5 years ago and was delighted to see the village still has some of
it's old charm. So many memories spring to mind of my school days and the friends that I had. Some of whom
still live there and I am in touch.I just felt I wanted to connect again no matter how briefly. I am hopeing
to visit later this year, my home now is in Washington state and has been for some time. However I don't think
I will ever lose the yearning to back and live!
In frienship,

I am currently researching my family tree and i have found that my Great x2 grandmother Mary Ann Lloyd was born in Poynton around 1866. Her father
John Lloyd was born in Adlington around 1832.
John and his wife Theresa and daughters Mary and Hannah are listed as living in Poynton in the 1871 census at a place called Highway. However i then loose the family and all apart from Mary Ann are missing in the 1881 and 91 census.
I was wondering where can i find birth, marriage and death records for this area.
Also is there a Lloyd family still living in Poynton.

Hello,
Does anyone possess - or could any kind person email me - a photo of the stained
glass window in St. George's Parish Church, Poynton, erected in memory of
William Alfred Turner, Esq., who died in 1886? When I tried to enter the church
last week, all the doors were locked so I was unable to take a photograph of it.
An acquaintance of mine sent me the inscription written on a brass plate below
the window, which reads: "To the glory of God: And in memory of William
Alfred Turner of Barlow Fold in the parish of Poynton in this county, who
departed this life 16th June 1886, aged 48. This window is erected by his
widow...". I am principally interested in the Manchester cotton
manufacturer - William Alfred Turner (1839-1886) - because of his patronage of
certain Pre-Raphaelite artists. Can anyone tell me anything about him? Thanks,
and greetings from Germany...of all places!

Have just discovered this interesting site. While visiting cousins in the
UK in August we decided to try to find Elm Beds Cottages in Poynton where
my great great grandfather lssac Hallam lived. Not only did we find the
house with the help of a kind local gentleman walking along the tow path, but
were delighted to discover a distant relation (7th cousin) in residence!
Very exciting for this visitor from Tasmania.

According to my brother, the family geneologist, we are descended from a younger
son of the Warren family who left Poynton in the 1600's and emigrated to
Maryland. His descendants moved to Virginia, and my great great grandfather
moved west to Tennessee, where we now live. His grandfather had lived on a
plantation called Poynton in Virginia.

I left Poynton around 1965 and as you can see by the web site now residing in OZ
but I was amazed at how many names I remembered in your visitors book, probably
due to delivering papers for Claytons news agency for many years. A great place
to grow up with such attractions as the slag heaps, sand quarry and the
Derbyshire hills all close by to explore. PS does any one know the
whereabouts of Rod Cole from Higher Poynton last known heading for Canada.

Hi,
This is an excellent site - I have seen the photos and used the re-uinted
section to try to find my old friends, the Hills and the Hunts.
I knew Poynton well in the 1960s/70s when I spent much of my school holidays
there. My Mother was born in Poynton - at the same house my (Great) Aunt lived
in. ["Croysdale", 58, Chester Road]. My Aunt was Miss Iris (Bunt)
Butterworth and my Mother, Mrs Della Cooksey Jones (Nee French).
It was tremendous to see Fountain Place on the front page - going to and from
Poynton I used to catch the joint Ribble/Trent X1 (Manchester-Derby) Bus Service
from just next to bernie White's Chemist there.
The Church has mixed memories for me - tyhe Butterworth family grave is there (I
must visit it again soon!) but my Aunt was knocked-down there when going to
Christmas Midnight Mass in 1966. Her broken leg recovered and with her usual
spirit, she pottered on until she became too ill to continue living in her large
house and joined us in Derby (that was 1982).
I used to walk with my Aunt from Higher Poynton (by the new Marina, as it was
then) to Lyme Hall at Disley. 9My Aunt and my Nanna were born to James &
Isabelle Butterworth in Higher Poynton)
If anyone has any old (or more new) photos about Poynotn I'd be fascinated.
I live down here in Hampshire (UK) now but Poynton is much closer to me than the
200 geographical miles.
Best wishes to you all, John French-Jones.

My 10th great grandmother Dorothy Poynton, born about 1577, somewhere around
Northampton, was probably related to the Poyntons of Poynton Village. William
Stone (1603-1659), the first governor of Maryland (USA) named his estate,
Poynton Manor, after his mother Dorothy Poynton. If anyone in the Village has
any information on the history of Poynton Village I would love to hear from you.

May I suggest to the last entrant, perhaps he should try Blackpool if it's attractions he wants!!! Poynton is full of many nice places to go, and see. How odd that he would think a resturant is the only place worth a visit!! The words life, and get a, spring to mind.

i have visited a famous restaurant in Poynton, which is called the Deeba. This fine establishment promoted this site and also Poynton. the only bad thing is that there are no other attractions in Poynton therefore the only reason to visit this place is to the
Deeba.

I remember the name Warburton in Poynton.
There was a lady who owned a shop at Hockley, top of Park Lane,(I think it was a cake shop). Can't remember her first name, but do remember that she was Auntie to Barbara Burton and Marjorie who lived in Dicken's Lane.
Burton's at one time took over the 'Corner Cafe'at Poynton Church. Small world isn't it.

Found this site a few weeks back and logged on to see what was happening in my "old town". I am the brother of Pat Stagg who has left a message on this site. I thought we moved to Poynton In 1963 our kid! Could be wrong.
Anita Rogers, did you have a brother called Chris? I seem to remember a Chris Ottley from my young days.
I live in Australia, have been here since 1968. Married at St Georges but divorced and re-married. Lovely to read about Poynton as I have so many happy memories of the place.
John Bann, Chris Thomas and your brother Graham...where are you now.
Great site. Keep it up.

I have just scrolled down the page and read the comments on the website. also saw an early one of mine. I am hoping to visit PoyntonSept.15th. after a 30 year absence. I know I shall find it changed but I'm really excited to see it again. I was born there many years ago and left in 1948 to live in Bournemouth. Married there and have lived in the U.S.A most of my married life. Do hope I will see some of my old class mates for the short time I will be there.
There is a message from a Warbutton, if she would like to contact me I think I may have some information on someone in her family. Unfortunately I didn't see an address to reply to. Write to my e.mail address.
Looking forward to seeing my old "village".

Visiting this site made me remember the old times when i lived in Poynton. My family moved to Poynotn 1986 and we were the only Japanese family in the village. I remember a pciture of my sister and i being hung in a photo sshop in the village. I've been able to visit Poynton a couple of times since leaving but everytime i have visited i feel like i'm at home since some buildings just never change. But i am suprised by some of the big changes that have been made though. Anyway i hope to have a chance to go back there again soon to visit.

! can not tell you how many times I have thought
of you wonderful people of Poynton through the years. We were so lucky
to live in Poynton in 1984 and 5. My two children went to public school there.
Their name"s are Trina and Gary Corson. Do any of you
remember two little American children? Gary just sent me an E mail with this
address. What fun to see the church and what wonderful memories we have of the
butcher store, veg stand behind the church, Post office were a nice lady gave
my kids candy and the very kind doctor who I have learned has passed away. We
all want to know if Berl ,I believe that is how she spells her name, who ran
the vegetable shop with her husband and family is still alive. She told me
when we left she would never Wright us but I have sent letters to her anyway
and even stopped by a few times when I was in Poynton through the years.
We would love to hear she is alive and doing fine. That year she had a
Christmas tree for us . We went out and bought lights which we gave to the new
little school that the kids went to when we left to return to California. It
was a sad day. Thank you for bing so kind and welcomeing . We were a long way
form home. If any of you are ever in Northern California E mail us and we
would love to show you around. We live in Chico north of Sacramento. Their are
tears in my eyes thanks and please let us know about Berl My name is Sally

It was so interesting to find this website! I was born and brought up in Poynton, daughter of Arthur Webb and Edith Arnold and born at Midway Farm, Poynton. The farm was demolished many years ago and now there are large homes built there. Actually, there is a large council estate built on land that was owned by my dad. I emigrated to Canada about 36 years ago but have kept in touch with friends in Poynton over the years. I belonged to Poynton Tennis Club years ago! A friend of Pauline Barlow, Cathy Sheldon, cousin of Dorothy Hooley. I would love to hear from anyone who reads this and remembers me! Please e-mail me - it would be super to hear from you. I have very fond memories of Poynton, it has certainly grown since I lived there. My sister Kathleen lived there all her life, her married name was Kathleen Davenport. Looking forward to hearing from anyone who may remember me!

What a lovely suprise! I was born in Poynton, 1958. Daughter of Audrey (Dale) & Brian Jones. Attended Poynton Infant & Junior school. Now live in Lexington Virginia, USA. I am currently enrolled a full time student at Hollins University in Roanoke Virgina. Poynton has never left me. The village is woven into the fiber of who I am. I am in the process of writing a book centered around life in Poynton village. I came to the Poynton Web page as part of my research. What a delight it has been to discover the names of several class mates in the vistors book. With children of the village living in places such as Australia and the U.S, Poynton has become global community! I would love to hear from anyone who remembers me--Debra Quinn

Hello folks, I must be getting a little homesick. I lived in Poynton for the first 18 years of my life, and then for a few years after that. I miss nights out in the Farmers, and Fisher. Staggering home with a Take Out from the New Garden... Does anyone have info on Richard Moss (ran away to Canada to marry his childhood sweetheart). My other is still a District Nurse in Poynton! Give me a mention if you see her.. Cheers Tim
