Lets Get Growing!

Let’s get growing.

The children and staff at Vernon Primary school were very excited and honoured to be presented with a second place ‘Go Green’ Environmental Innovation Award in the form of a cheque for £1000.

Over the last few months, children from Reception up to Year 6 have been involved with developing an innovative outdoor project. The aim is to use teaching and learning and practical skills to increase children’s awareness of the need to reduce carbon emissions and climate change.

Vernon Primary decided that they wanted to develop outdoor areas of the school and use these to promote all aspects of learning based on an environmental and ecological theme. Children throughout the school were invited to design how they would want a new school garden to look and what kind of plants and vegetables they would like to grow.

The pupils played a very important role in demonstrating to ‘Go Green’ why Vernon Primary school deserved to receive funding for their project. The children worked extremely hard, alongside Year 4 teacher Miss Burgess and Year 2 teacher Miss Williams, giving a formal presentation to demonstrate the positive effects that the Eco garden would have on their learning and on the environment. They also talked about the exciting activities which have already taken place in school to support the venture. Some of these have included growing sunflowers, building ‘bug hotels’ and looking at eco systems. The judges from ‘Go Green’ were tremendously impressed with both the dedication of the children and staff as well as the quality and detail of the school’s proposals.

Having now received the cheque, the children are looking forward to getting the garden underway and to seeing the growing area transform.
