Mountain Rescue will provide assistance to anyone who becomes lost or injured in the mountains, rural or urban areas, whatever the reason, and are allerted via the 999 system. Teams are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, whatever the weather and they rely entirely on charitable donations to fund their work. All team members are experienced walkers, climbers or mountaineers and generally will have an additional specialism that they bring to the team. Team members are voluntary and give up their time free of charge.
As well as the 'bread and butter' work they do, rescuing lost or injured walkers and climbers, they are increasingly tasked to conduct other work including:
Conducting urban searches for vulnerable missing persons
Assisting the ambulance service during times of adverse weather where they can't get to a casualty
Rescuing motorists and residents stranded in the snow
Assisting at major incidents such as train or plane crashes, and during major floods
So if you thought you'd never need Mountain Rescue you may be mistaken!
This April I will be running the 2012 London Marathon whilst carrying my Mountain Rescue back pack, with the aim of raising funds and awareness for Mountain Rescue England and Wales.
