To Salt or Not to Salt

I find it rather confusing on what products we are allowed to use to combat the snow and icy conditions on our paths and driveways.

Rock Salt is commonly used on the major highways but for our own individual driveways which is the safest and easiest way to keep them protected?

Is ordinary household salt recommended or does it ruin the driveways?

In the good old days we were able to use our ashes from the fire grate.

We have flags on our driveway and have been told not to use any salt products at all - so what's the answer?  Cat litter can help but not the kind our cat uses!

It's hard work sweeping all the snow away before it packs into ice!!

Suggestions gratefully appreciated!
