Poynton Walk - two

Norbury Brook, Middlewood, Prince's Wood and Views of Lyme Cage and Cheshire Plain.

A walk of 4.5 miles and a shorter, less hilly, walk of 3 miles.

Of particular interest are the path along Norbury Brook, the views from the high ground near New House Farm and the walk along the incline through Prince's Wood. The path can be very muddy around Towers farm. Unless the situation changes wellington boots are recommended except in dry weather.

This walk was designed and written by Mr. H. Hadfield of the Ramblers Association.

Start at Poynton Park car park off South Park Drive. Walk back towards the Pool and then take the good path to the right round the Pool, on the same side as the car park. Return to South Park Drive with the backs of the houses on Anglesey Drive on the left. Turn left through the gate and shortly left again down Anglesey Drive. After 250 yards take Path 68 on the right. At Towers Road turn left and after 500 yards turn right over the stile along Path 64. Continue with Towers Farm on the left, over the stile, and along the track to the junction with Path 62. from here there is a choice between the short and the long walk.,

The name of the Towers comes from the large medievil mansion, built by the Warren family. An avenue of trees, which can still be seen in Poynton Park, led from the Towers to London Road North.

For the long walk turn left on Path 62 crossing Norbury Brook. take the well used path, almost immediately on the right, and follow the path which goes through the wood roughly following the line of the brook, until Middlewood Road is reached.

The path through the wood closely follows the line of an old mill lade which brought water to Norbury Mill at the end of mill Lane.

At the road, cross the bridge, bend left and take Path 14 on the right, behind the Poynton sign, which slopes upwards through the wood. Watch for the stile at the top edge of the wood. Cross to an open field, continue to the gate at the far side and turn left along a track.

If open cast mining is allowed, this area, and backwards to Towers Farm, will be either in the extraction hole or suffer from the dumps of earth overlay.

Continue past the masts and 300 yards past the farm take the stile on the right shortly before the road is reached. Follow Path 10 with the hedge on the left. Pass the pond on the right, then one on the left and then, immediately on the left, pass over the stile into the wood onto Path 85. Continue through the wood until Path 5, Princes Incline. The golf course is immediately facing on the far side of the wood. Turn right down Prince's Incline. At Towers road turn right again and then left into South Park Drive and back to the car park.

The short walk.

Turn right along Path 62 with, at first, meadows on both sides and later, on the left, a wood and the site of the old Park Pit. The path then joins a wide track.

The house near the junction of this path with the wide dirt track used to be the home of the Park Pits Engineer.

Turn right and continue down the wide track for about 100 yards. At the stile on the right take Path 60 and continue over the field until Towers Road is reached.

The buildings near the junction of Prince's Incline with Towers Road, were once the busy offices and maintenance workshops of the large Poynton colliery system.

Turn right at Towers Road and then left at South Park Drive to the start of the walk.
