Avro Heritage Museum is open on Saturday and Sunday

By Editor Girl on Jun 27, 2021

The Avro Heritage Museum has been open since the end of May on Saturday and Sunday from 10.00am until 5.00pm for pre booked visits.

Social distancing measures are in place throughout the museum and in the grounds and some areas are closed because of covid restrictions.  However the following are open:

EXHIBITION HALL

The main exhibition hall is open and is packed with fascinating exhibits, including a full size replica of the Avro Type F. The hall is arranged chronologically and visitors can follow the story from the earliest days of Avro right the way through to the British Aerospace years at Woodford and Chadderton. Floor walkers are on hand to answer any questions.

There are cockpits of an Avro Anson and English Electric Canberra on display in the main exhibition hall. The interior of both cockpits can be viewed by looking through the doors and windows. The replica front fuselage section of Avro Lancaster S for Sugar takes pride of place in the middle of the hall. Unfortunately the interior of our Lancaster fuselage is currently closed to visitors because social distancing is not possible in this confined space.

Demonstrations will run throughout the day on the Nimrod Tactical Navigator’s Station, simulating how the mighty Nimrod used state of the art technology to hunt down enemy submarines.

LANCASTER CINEMA ROOM

A range of films are shown on a continuous loop throughout the day.

VULCAN PARK

Visitors can walk around the awe-inspiring Avro Vulcan XM603, taking in the majesty of the only Vulcan in the world preserved in anti-flash white markings. All of our outdoor cockpits can also be viewed from outside (Avro 748, Hawker Siddeley Nimrod, and Vickers VC10) and guides are on hand to answer questions.

An ex Vulcan pilot will be giving a talk underneath the wings of the Vulcan at 11:00 am, 1:00 pm, and 3:00 pm.

There are several picnic tables inside Vulcan Park and visitors are welcome to bring their own food. All we ask is that you dispose of your rubbish in the bins provided or take it home with you. Please do not bring alcoholic drinks onto our premises.

VULCAN CAFÉ

The café is open from 10:30 am – 4:00 pm and serves hot & cold drinks plus a range of prepackaged food (crisps, biscuits, cake bars etc.). A maximum of 10 visitors are permitted inside the café at any one time to ensure that social distancing can be safely observed.

SHOP

The shop stocks a range of models, gifts, clothing, books and toys.
